چکیده
This is a book about induction and inductive inference. Since these terms may mean different things to different people, it is worth fixing at the outset what is meant by them here. Traditionally, induction has had a narrow meaning. At its narrowest, it refers to “induction by simple enumeration,” the inference from “Some As are B” to “All As are B.” This is an example of what is known as “ampliative inference,” for we have amplified the instances to which our knowledge applies. The premise applies just to the few cases of As at hand; the conclusion applies to all. I take this idea of amplification in its most general sense to be what induction is about. I shall use “induction” and “inductive inference” as the general term for any sort of ampliative inference; that is, any licit inferences that lead to conclusions logically stronger than the premises. Therefore the terms embrace what is sometimes called “abductive inference,” which is an inference to something that explains an otherwise puzzling phenomenon. A still broader form of induction commonly goes under the name of “confirmation theory.” It typically has no inferences with premises and conclusions. Rather it looks at degrees of support between propositions. The best-known and dominant form is probabilistic support.

Elastic-Plastic Transition of Pressurized Functionally Graded Orthotropic Cylinder using Seth’s Transition Theory
In this paper the radial deformation and the corresponding stresses in a functionally graded orthotropic hollow cylinder with the variation in thickness and density according to power law and rotating about its axis under pressure is investigated by using Seth's transition theory. The material of the cylinder is assumed to be non-homogeneous and orthotropic. This theory helps to achieve better ...

متن کاملVibration Analysis of Functionally Graded Spinning Cylindrical Shells Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory
In this paper the vibration of a spinning cylindrical shell made of functional graded material is investigated. After a brief introduction of FG materials, by employing higher order theory for shell deformation, constitutive relationships are derived. Next, governing differential equation of spinning cylindrical shell is obtained through utilizing energy method and Hamilton’s principle. Making ...
متن کاملNonlinear analysis of radially functionally graded hyperelastic cylindrical shells with axially-varying thickness and non-uniform pressure loads based on perturbation theory
In this study, nonlinear analysis for thick cylindrical pressure vessels with arbitrary variable thickness made of hyperelastic functionally graded material properties in nearly incompressible state and clamped boundary conditions under non-uniform pressure loading is presented. Thickness and pressure of the shell are considered in axial direction by arbitrary nonlinear profiles. The FG materia...
متن کاملApplication of Chaos Theory in Hazardous Material Transportation
Risk factors are generally defined and assigned to road networks, as constant measures in hazmat routing problems. In fact, they may be dynamic variables depending on traffic volume, weather and road condition, and drivers' behavior. In this research work, risk factors are defined as dynamic variables using the concept of chaos theory. The largest Lyapunov exponent is utilized to determine the ...
